A panic attack is a sudden episode of intense fear that triggers severe physical reactions when there is no real danger or apparent cause. Panic attacks can be very frightening. When panic attacks occur, you might think you’re losing control, having a heart attack, or even dying.

Many people have just one or two panic attacks in their lifetimes, and the problem goes away, perhaps when a stressful situation ends. But if you’ve had recurrent, unexpected panic attacks and spent long periods in constant fear of another attack, you may have a condition called panic disorder.

Although panic attacks themselves aren’t life-threatening, they can be frightening and significantly affect your quality of life. But therapy can be very effective.

It’s not known what causes panic attacks or panic disorder, but these factors may play a role:

Genetics

Major stress

Temperament that is more sensitive to stress or prone to negative emotions

Certain changes in the way parts of your brain function

Breathing exercises as: breathe in as slowly, deeply, and gently as you can, through your nose, breathe out slowly, deeply, and gently through your mouth. Some people find it helpful to count steadily from 1 to 5 on each in-breath and each out-breath. Close your eyes and focus on your breathing. Also, Mindfulness and other techniques can help with controlling panic attacks.

Physical Exercises

A simple bike ride, dance class, or even a brisk walk can be a powerful tool for those suffering from panic attacks. Activities like these also help people who are feeling overly nervous and anxious about an upcoming test, a big presentation, or an important meeting.

Nutrition

Foods rich in zinc such as oysters, cashews, liver, beef, and egg yolks have been linked to lowered anxiety. Other foods, including fatty fish like wild Alaskan salmon, contain omega-3 fatty acids. Omega3 is related with lowering anxiety and helping in panic attacks.

Breathe deeply from the abdomen, filling the lungs slowly and steadily while counting to 4 on both the inhale and the exhale. People can also try using 4-7-8 breathing, or “relaxing breath.” With this technique, the person breathes in for 4 seconds, holds the breath for 7 seconds, then exhales slowly for 8 seconds.

Gently let them know that you think they might be having a panic attack and that you are there for them. Encourage them to breathe slowly and deeply – it can help to do something structured or repetitive they can focus on, such as counting out loud, or asking them to watch while you gently raise your arm up and down.

Symptoms of a panic attack include extreme anxiety and physical sensations of fear, such as increased heart rate, shortness of breath, trembling and muscle tension.

Most panic attacks last between 5 and 20 minutes. Some have been reported to last up to an hour. The number of attacks you have will depend on how severe your condition is. Some people have attacks once or twice a month, while others have them several times a week.
